Great Keppel Trip: Day Six Snorkelling Misadventures

For once we didnt do our regular midday cocktail of the day we figured we better get the snorkelling in before we started drinking or the fish would be getting drunk from the alcohol exuding from our skin :o)

We trundled up to the watersports hut to grab masks, breathing tubes and flippers and then headed off to the rocks around which we were reliably informed was some snorkel-worthy viewing. The rocks were sharp, hard and too many! I was feeling very lethargic that day and I just wanted to jump in and start looking at fish and stuff. We stopped around half way around to the viewing place and decided to try and get in via there and swim round to the other little beach on the other side. There were barnacles and rocks everywhere. The rocks were slimy, we were not wearing armour. One little wave sent us skidding, its some sort of miracles we werent sliced open with every step. After one failed attempt at entering the water we walked around a little more to try a different spot. Still no luck. Whilst standing calf deep in water and gingerly avoiding sharp oyster bits and what not I saw a little shiny green fish! So I put my mask and breathing tube on (totally unnecessary but I wanted to do some actual snorkelling) and stuck my big butt in the air to lean over and look at the little fish. Very cute. We figured by the number of butterflies that were fluttering around us we should have gone on a nature walk instead.

We painfully negotiated the rocks back to the main beach and then thought just for the sake of it wed snorkel in the beach part. Sand and some seaweed was all we saw. Sigh. And the water was cloudy too. Double sigh.

Can I get a hurrah?!
