That's Not Quite The Definition Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitter and twisted, I'm just irritated by a lot word misusage. It really gets my cow. Er, I mean goat. If you're in Australia and you own a TV or a radio, you've bought a newspaper or even talked to a friend recently, then it's impossible not to have heard about Jessica Watson's return from her around the world trip. But there is something that is really annoying me. Jessica Watson is not a hero. She's not even a heroine. Yes, she is brave for going out and sailing around the world by herself (doesn't matter the age) but she's not a hero. She didn't save anyone's life, she didn't single-handedly end the wars around the globe, she didn't cure world hunger and I don't remember seeing her run into a burning building to rescue a pet. Yes, she is inspirational. Yes, she could is someone young people could look up to. But for gravy's sake, could we cut all the hero talk? An over-heroed Tyd 16 May 2010 - 11:22 am |
