...once upon a time... There once lived a boy, Robert who was strong of mind and kind of heart. He was dating a young lady, Wendy who was beautiful, sweet and caring. Now they had been dating for 10 months before the day of St Valentines was upon them. Now Wendy had bought a Valentines card for Robert and sent it so that it would arrive in time for the big day. Robert however had not bought a card for Wendy and thought that Valentines Day was all a load of bunkum brought on by the greeting card industry and the Americans. Wendy was understandably upset that she did not receive a card from Robert and was quite moody for a few days after Valentines Day. Robert had explained to her that he did not believe in this ritual but she would have none of his excuses, so the very next day this young lad set out from the newsagents. He got them to dig into their drawers of old card stock and bought up about 20 Valentines cards for Wendy. He took them home and began filling them in but he did not sign them from Robert, oh no, he signed them from Galdagoff Spalspinsky. He then proceeded to mail all of these cards from different places around Sydney. Wendy was delighted on receipt of the cards and her moods instantly disappeared. Over the years Robert would send her a Valentines card from Galdagoff Spalspinsky and never would he sign one from himself. He always pretended to not know anything about these cards and would feign surprise whenever she brought them out to show him. Years down the track and Robert married Wendy, but the cards from Mr Spalspinsky did not stop. Now they would be addressed to Wendy with her maiden name, refusing to acknowledge that she was now married to Robert, and they would always be begging for her to leave that louse of a husband and be with him. It is now over 30 years since Robert sent those first cards and Galdagoff has not missed a year. Every year Robert vows he will catch Spalspinsky in the act of delivering a card and that will be the end of it. Isnt it nice that after all these years your parents can still be so adorably cute and romantic? Happy Valentines Day, Mum and Dad. This has been a Tydmark presentation 14 February 2002 - 9:44 am |
