Whoops, There Goes The Coat Of Arms Its been a long time tradition of Aussies saying that they are probably the only country in the world that eats their own coat of arms. We have a kangaroo and an emu (thats pronounced emew not emoo) surrounding the official looking bit of it. Up until Wednesday night Id never attempted to eat any of our native animals, it just seemed rude or something. Mums penfriends husband was out here from Singapore for a conference and as he loves all the typical Aussie stuff we decided to take him to Lillipilli in The Rocks for an Aussie meal. I had crocodile for starters and then emu steak for a main. Crocodile kinda takes like chicken, its an age old clich that everything seems to taste like chicken that isnt beef or fish. Crocodile was quite tough and it had a faint hint of fish about it so Id have to say it tasted chicken fishy. The emu didnt taste like anything Id had before which was nice I thought. All that said and done it was pretty bland. Mum tried the wallaby which she expected to taste like kangaroo (being the same species and all) but it didnt, maybe it was just the way it was cooked. There was an Aboriginal bloke that did some Yiddaki (totally spelt that wrong) playing (known as didgeridoo to most people but truth is it was the name of a song and a white settler thought it was the name of the instrument) and told us stories of the Dreaming and showed us paintings and stuff. Even though we learnt a little in school it was great to have that bloke there giving us the history and stuff. I think all Aussies should go to the restaurant and not just have it for the tourists, you never know when youll learn something new! Pass the wombat with a side order of dingo, Im feeling peckish Tyd 26 April 2002 - 9:24 am |
