His Friends Called Him Ned MyNewBestFriend and I went to a media screening of Ned Kelly last night. So Im going to do a little review here. Its hard to have an unbiased opinion of it because it does have the sexiest thing on two legs in it. Plus Heath Ledger. Thats a pretty good movie right there. Sorry what was that? Oh right, plot, dialogue and so forth. It was good. I think we may have been shown a rough cut though because some of the editing was the opposite of smooth. I thought the Irish accents would be laughable but they were fairly decent. The most laughable accent was that of Rachel Griffiths. I think she was attempting to do a Scottish one. The scene was a bit of comic relief in itself so maybe she was trying to make it sound off. Everyone in the cosy theatrette laughed their heads off. It was pretty dang funny. I dont know what the hoo har is about the rating for the shooting scenes, there is a far more disturbing scene with a horse. And no, its not where Joe Byrne (Orli) is arrested for illegal use of a horse. Although on last count he beds four women in the film. Not bad work if you can get it. If you know the Ned Kelly story then you know how its going to end. If you dont dont read the next few sentences. I liked the gang so much that I was hoping this insane hope that theyd trounce the police and win in the end. I cried during the last scene with Dan Kelly and Steve Hart. It made you remember that the Kelly Gang were all really still boys playing with grown up toys. And I take offence to the monkey bit. Huge offence. And I think its poetic justice where Joe is shot. If you want to see a movie that has beards aplenty and shooting and accents a-go-go then Ned Kelly is the movie for you. If you want to see Orli in a bath and speaking Chinese, then Ned Kelly is the movie for you. End of spoilerishness. Oh and if anyone asks Im a freelance journalist. Tyd 25 March 2003 - 8:23 am |
